You know those people…?

The ones that keep up with their blogs and have posts scheduled months in advance and are reliable?

Yeah, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m not one of those people.

And it’s not anything like laziness, or lack of topic ideas. It’s more like lack of time and the fear that if I use the limited time I do have to write writing this that means that I won’t be writing books.

It’s a hard spot to be in.

There was a panel about this very topic at AWP, but it was presented very badly and I didn’t get anything out of it. But the question of whether we, as writers, are maybe allotted a certain number of words a day, and we have to be economical with them, not spend them on things like blogs and social media, but rather on our Work-In-Progress…the idea has some merit.

But it’s also a scary thought. Are words, the words that are flowing through me, really that scarce? Is it maybe that it’s easier to post 144 characters than actually sit down here and pound out a meaningful article? And, also, the fear that no one is reading this anyway, so maybe it really is a waste of time?

I think, for me, it’s a general feeling of scarcitiy around my writing. A feeling that has no basis in anything but fear. A feeling I’m working hard to get rid of.

I’m a:

  • wife
  • mother
  • daughter
  • sister
  • friend
  • author
  • employee
  • contractor
  • business owner
  • business executive
  • finance department
  • chef
  • chauffeur
  • lifeguard
  • editer
  • designer
  • the list goes on and on…

All of these things to different people, different organizations. But being a good one or two of them doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m automatically neglecting the others. I’m trying to remind myself of that, every day. I can’t do everything at once, but I can do it all in turn.

I’m going to make a shift with this blog. I’ve tried to keep it semi-professional in the past, to make it a place to learn about me as a person, but mostly about my writing and jewelry. I’m giving up on that. I’m not going to worry so much about what I should be blogging anymore, and be more honest about where I’m at in life. I thought about trying to start another blog with something about wishing for a flip-phone in it’s name (I wanted another F word that meant wishing, but never came up with one) to talk about how tempted I am to trash the iPhone and all of the connectivity and return to having just a phone that people had to call me on. I’m going to write more about stuff like that.

I’m still going to tell you about my books and the stuff going on with the Ruby Slippers investigation. It’s just going to get a lot more personal.

I hope that’s okay.

Scheduling Update

Happy Monday!

Today is the beginning of what could be a very big week. The Wizard of Oz Festival starts in just three days, and in four, they will do the first dives to try to recover the stolen ruby slippers. Complete details are available here, but for those of you on my email list, I wanted to give a quick update: My signing will be from 12-1 on Friday, June 12, not 3:30-5:30 as I had listed in the newsletter. The 12-1 time was what had been agreed on before the dives were announced, and by then it was too late to get it changed in the advertising, so we’re going to stick to the original time. I’ll be around a lot of the day on Thursday and Friday though, so if you see me and we weren’t able to connect at the actual signing time, please come up and say hi! I also already signed all the books the museum currently has, and I’ll leave extra swag there if they’ll let me.

In other exciting news, I’m going to be interviewed for the documentary on the theft. I was about to say I’ve never been on TV before, but I just remembered I was seated next to the stage for a CMT special, so I was on every time they did a long-shot. But I’ve never had a speaking part before 🙂

If/when the shoes are found (trying not to jinx it) I hope they make the case files public, I would love to dive in and write the real story. Keep your fingers crossed with me.

An unexamined life…

You may have deduced, from lack of posting, that I’ve kinda sorta lost control of my time again. Working two contract jobs, plus having kids and pets and husband and my own businesses is hard. At the beginning of the year, I created a planner for myself that I thought would help me keep everything organized. It did, until it didn’t.

The original planner is here. I really liked having the week-at-a-glance and each day having it’s own page, plus having a place to track what I was reading, and my art projects.

But when I took on the other jobs, I had a different to-do list for each of them, and doing my daily check-in was cumbersome as I tried to keep everything separate. I went from loving my reflection time to actively avoiding it.

This week a dear friend stayed with us for a few days, and her planner was very similar to the Passion Planner. The thing I didn’t like about it is that the to-do lists are for the whole week, rather than broken down by day. I want to make a dedicated effort to put goals to each day. But seeing hers, I saw how it could work, so I decided to revamp mine.

You can download the new version here.

Basically, I took everything I liked from my planner and combined it with Mendy and Passion Planner’s. It feels less overwhelming already, I’ll let you know next week if it works for me.

Feel free to grab it and try it out yourself, tell me what you think. What parts of planners do you love, what do you always want changed?
